Mocha

What it is

Mocha is a JavaScript test framework for running tests in Node.js and in browsers. It executes tests serially by default and associates uncaught exceptions with the relevant test cases. Asynchronous tests can use callbacks or return promises, and parallel execution is available in Node.js but not in browsers. The command-line interface defaults to the BDD interface and spec reporter; its --ui option selects an interface, and reporters can be configured. Browser runs default to the HTML reporter. Installation as a development dependency is documented for npm, pnpm, and yarn. Mocha 12 requires Node.js ^20.19.0 or >=22.12.0, while browser builds document support for evergreen Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. It supports JavaScript and TypeScript, along with parameterized cases, but does not include built-in mocks. The project is free and open source, and documentation lists editor-related packages for TextMate, JetBrains IDEs, Wallaby.js, Emacs, and VS Code.

For and against

For

  • Runs tests in Node.js and browsers
  • Supports callbacks and promise-based asynchronous tests
  • Offers parallel execution in Node.js
  • Supports JavaScript, TypeScript, and parameterized cases
  • Free and open source

Against

  • Parallel mode is unavailable in browsers
  • Mocha 12 requires a recent Node.js version
  • No built-in mocks

The verdict

Mocha covers serial and asynchronous testing, with parallel execution available for Node.js projects. Browser parallel mode and the Node.js version requirement are worth checking against a project’s setup.

Who it suits

Mocha suits JavaScript and TypeScript developers who need a test framework for Node.js or browser projects. It may also fit teams seeking asynchronous or parameterized tests and configurable reporters.
