What it is
Metalsmith is a free static-site generator for NodeJS that works as a pluggable library rather than requiring a predefined project structure. It turns a directory tree into plain JavaScript objects that plugins can transform, giving developers control over how projects are arranged and built. It provides both a JavaScript API and a command-line interface, and supports configuration over code as well as code over configuration. Metalsmith works with npm, Markdown, JSON, YAML, and a templating language of choice. Example uses include static sites, scaffolding, backups, command-line and deployment tools, and eBooks built from Markdown for PDF, ePUB, or MOBI output. Starter repositories include blog, company, resume, and clean-blog projects. Builds create static folders that can be deployed to CDNs, Netlify, GitHub Pages, GitLab Pages, SFTP hosts, or custom servers. Plugin examples include Sass, PostCSS, JavaScript bundling, Markdown, collections, and layouts. Metalsmith requires NodeJS; the listed platforms include API, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Partial rebuilds are not available, and the documentation recommends using a file watcher and browser synchronization package for automatic rebuilds.
