MeshLab
MeshLab · Pisa, Italy · founded 2005
What it is
MeshLab is a free, open-source desktop system for processing and editing 3D triangular meshes on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its tools cover editing, cleaning, healing, inspection, rendering, texturing, and conversion. The software is intended for raw data from 3D digitization, including unstructured models from 3D scanning, and for preparing models for 3D printing. It supports PTX point-cloud and range-map inputs, with exports including PLY, STL, OBJ, OFF, WRL, and DXF. PyMeshLab provides a Python interface for loading and saving meshes and applying MeshLab filters. The VCG code can be used in a standalone, large-scale automated mesh-processing pipeline. MeshLab is distributed under the GPL 3.0 license. The site lists MeshLab 2025.07, released September 9, 2025, with ARM64 support on Linux and macOS and support for 3MF. Usage questions are directed to Stack Overflow, bug reports to GitHub, and video resources cover basics, features, scanning workflows, and mesh cleaning.
For and against
For
- Free and open source
- Runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Tools for cleaning and repairing meshes
- Python library available
- Exports common 3D formats
Against
- No real-time capture
- Focused on triangular mesh processing
- Support questions go through Stack Overflow
- Distributed under GPL 3.0
The verdict
MeshLab provides a broad desktop toolkit for scanned-mesh cleanup, inspection, conversion, and 3D-print preparation. Its Python interface and VCG pipeline support automation, while capture itself is not included.
Who it suits
MeshLab suits people processing unstructured 3D-scan models, preparing meshes for 3D printing, or building automated mesh workflows. It also fits Python users who want MeshLab filters through PyMeshLab.
