Mesh2Rig
What it is
Mesh2Rig is a Blender add-on that turns mesh animation and deformation into standard skeletal animation. It supports Cell Fracture and rigid-body scenes, cloth and soft-body simulations, shape keys, and other complex mesh changes. Automated bone generation places bones inside a mesh using KDTree proximity; Simple Mode assigns one bone to each object for rigid debris. For deforming meshes, the add-on sets up Surface Deform modifiers automatically, avoiding manual weight painting. A one-click operation bakes mesh animation into standard skeletal Actions.
For larger scenes, Batch Processing can rig, bind, and bake objects from Blender collections in sequence. Smart Merging combines generated rigs and meshes into a Master Rig and Mesh while preserving animation. In single-object workflows, users can adjust the maximum bone count, bone proximity and length, and optional bone merging. Mesh2Rig is free, open source under GPL-3.0, and listed for Blender 4.2 LTS and newer on Linux, macOS, and Windows. The maker recommends removing original animation sources after a rig is finalized; high bone counts can also produce rotation artifacts if rotation constraints are enabled.
For and against
For
- Bakes mesh animation into standard skeletal Actions.
- Automates Surface Deform setup without manual weight painting.
- Batch processing works on Blender collections.
- Smart Merging preserves animations across combined rigs and meshes.
- Free and open source under GPL-3.0.
Against
- Requires Blender 4.2 LTS or newer.
- High bone counts may cause rotation artifacts with rotation constraints.
- Finalized rigs may require removing original animation sources.
The verdict
Mesh2Rig brings automated rigging and animation baking to a range of deforming and rigid mesh workflows. Its batch processing and merging tools address larger scenes, while users should account for the stated cleanup step and rotation constraint limitation.
Who it suits
Mesh2Rig suits Blender users preparing cloth, soft-body, rigid-body, or destruction animations for game development. It may also fit artists managing larger scenes of animated objects.
