Matchering
What it is
Matchering is free, open-source software that automatically matches and masters audio. Give it a target track and a reference track, and it produces a mastered target aligned with the reference’s RMS, frequency response, peak amplitude, and stereo width. Matchering 2.0 is available as a containerized web application, Python library, and ComfyUI node, and it is integrated into the UVR5 Desktop App. The Python library includes a command-line application and can connect with the Python ecosystem. It requires Python 3.8.0 or higher and a machine with 4 GB of RAM. WAV and MP3 are listed input formats, though MP3 loading requires FFmpeg to be installed separately. The project says the algorithm works well with almost all genres, especially EDM, but not experimental music with a very specific musical form. Its FAQ describes digital signal processing rather than neural-network use and says users may use their mastered tracks wherever they want. The Python package is distributed under GPLv3, with no published paid plans. The web application is intended for home or in-house use, not public Internet hosting without security and scalability changes.
For and against
For
- Matches RMS, frequency response, peak amplitude, and stereo width
- Available as a web app, Python library, and ComfyUI node
- Includes a command-line application
- WAV and MP3 are listed input formats
- No published paid plans
Against
- MP3 loading requires a separate FFmpeg installation
- Python library requires Python 3.8.0 or higher
- Python library requires at least 4 GB of RAM
- Web app is not suitable for public hosting as-is
The verdict
Matchering automates reference-based audio matching in several software forms and is distributed under GPLv3. MP3 setup requires an extra dependency, and its web application should not be exposed publicly without changes.
Who it suits
It suits audio creators who want automated matching against a reference track and can meet the Python runtime requirements. Those considering public hosting should account for the maker’s warning about security and scalability changes.
