MakeZPL
What it is
MakeZPL is a browser-based visual designer for Zebra labels that exports printer-ready ZPL II. The canvas supports text, barcodes, QR and Data Matrix codes, lines, boxes, ellipses, and images at 203, 300, or 600 dpi. Barcode choices include Code 128, Code 39, UPC-A, EAN-13, EAN-8, Interleaved 2 of 5, QR, and Data Matrix, using native ZPL commands in exports. Users can paste ZPL or open .zpl and .txt files, with warnings for unsupported commands. Imported ^GFA images are skipped; ^MD, ^PR, and ^PQ settings are handled in the label panel. Variable-data workflows bind elements to fields, import CSV or JSON, preview records, and export resolved or batch ZPL. Outputs also include placeholder templates and field-mapping CSV files. The site says processing occurs in-browser without accounts, backend, analytics, cookies, advertising, or third-party scripts. Once loaded, it works offline and autosaves to IndexedDB. Optional AI design uses the provider and API key chosen by the user.
For and against
For
- Free plan with no account
- Multiple barcode formats
- CSV and JSON variable data
- Batch ZPL export
- Works offline after loading
Against
- No API access
- Does not export images
- Imported ^GFA images are skipped
- Optional AI sends sample data externally
The verdict
Its lack of API and image export makes it less suitable for automated or image-output workflows.
Who it suits
It suits people designing Zebra labels manually or from CSV and JSON records. Browser processing and offline operation fit users who do not need an API.
