LibrePhotos
What it is
LibrePhotos is a self-hosted photo library manager that scans existing folders, identifies faces, places and events, and makes the collection searchable. A date-based timeline sits alongside views for faces, places, events and albums. Search can cover people, locations, objects, captions and metadata, with optional AI semantic search. It supports common image formats including RAW, HEIC and JPEG XL, along with videos and live photos. Users can create shared albums and public links, or connect an external Nextcloud instance to copy images, videos, RAW files and XMP sidecars into the library. The Android and iOS app keeps a local copy for offline browsing and can back up a camera roll to the server. LibrePhotos supports OpenID Connect sign-in. The project says it sends nothing to third parties and lists zero trackers or phone-home behavior. It is MIT licensed, volunteer maintained and has no paid tier. Deployment options include Docker, Kubernetes, Unraid and a standalone Windows program; the Windows build is intended for one person's library.
For and against
For
- Searches faces, places, objects, captions and metadata.
- Supports RAW, HEIC and JPEG XL.
- Mobile app supports offline browsing and camera-roll backup.
- MIT licensed with no paid tier.
- Supports shared albums and public links.
Against
- Standalone Windows build is for one person's library.
- Single-container image is CPU-only.
- Volunteer maintained project.
The verdict
LibrePhotos offers broad library search and self-hosted deployment, with mobile apps and sharing options. Its Windows build is limited to one person's library, and NVIDIA acceleration requires the standard Docker setup.
Who it suits
LibrePhotos suits people who want to manage a searchable photo library on their own infrastructure, including users who want mobile offline browsing or camera-roll backup. Shared-server users should use Docker rather than the standalone Windows build.
