LibreMesh
What it is
LibreMesh is a free, modular framework for creating OpenWrt-based firmware for wireless mesh nodes. It is designed for decentralized, community-run networks and can be used, copied, modified and distributed under the AGPL license. The code provides defaults for Babel, B.A.T.M.A.N. advanced, BMX7 and OLSR. Its default design combines BATMAN-adv at layer 2 with Babel at layer 3 to support roaming and network segmentation. A default flavor is described as working without manual configuration, while the project aims to provide smartphone-usable web management for non-expert users. Firmware can be requested through an online ImageBuilder, built on a host or taken from archived precompiled releases. The project recommends at least 16 MB flash and 128 MB RAM, although 8/64 MB routers may work. Configuration uses OpenWrt UCI or manual editing. Builds should be customized to preserve space and RAM, and direct package upgrades are discouraged.
For and against
For
- Free AGPL-licensed software
- Supports several mesh protocols
- Enables roaming and segmentation
- Offers online firmware building
- Provides smartphone-usable web management
Against
- Requires compatible router hardware
- Recommended hardware is 16 MB flash, 128 MB RAM
- Builds may need space-saving customization
- Direct package upgrades are discouraged
The verdict
LibreMesh provides a flexible foundation for community wireless meshes, with protocol defaults and several firmware-building paths. Hardware limits and maintenance guidance matter when preparing a deployment.
Who it suits
LibreMesh suits people building decentralized wireless networks with compatible OpenWrt routers. It is appropriate for users comfortable selecting, building or managing router firmware.
