Lakka
What it is
Lakka is a lightweight Linux distribution that turns a small computer into a retrogaming console. Based on LibreELEC and RetroArch, it uses RetroArch as its graphical interface, with unified emulator configuration and automatic joypad setup. Listed features include automatic controller recognition, rewinding, netplay, and shaders; games can support up to five players. Official builds target Raspberry Pi, Allwinner, iMX6, Amlogic, and 32-bit and 64-bit PC systems. Installation uses USB images made for specific target hardware, and instructions cover GNU/Linux, Windows, and MacOS. The PC build is meant for dedicated hardware and does not support virtualization, dual boot, or CD and DVD installation. Users provide their own ROMs, and netplay requires the same ROM on both sides; cores without savestate support cannot use netplay. The community-driven open-source project says it remains under heavy development, so bugs, missing features, and unsupported hardware may occur. Lakka is free, but hardware is not included.
