LACT
What it is
LACT is an open-source Linux tool for configuring and monitoring AMD, Nvidia, and Intel GPUs. It reports hardware details such as VBIOS, VRAM, hardware units, Resizable BAR status, and Vulkan features. Configurable charts show historical power, thermal, and frequency data; users can also review throttling information and export data as CSV. Available controls include power caps, GPU and VRAM clocks, AMD power states, and custom fan curves for AMD and Nvidia. Undervolting uses voltage offsets on AMD and VF curves on Nvidia. Profiles can activate in response to running processes or gamemode status. A system service handles configuration independently of a graphical session and can run headless from a configuration file. LACT also includes an OpenTelemetry metrics exporter and a JSON API over a Unix socket or TCP. TCP is disabled by default, and remote TCP management has no authentication or encryption. Installation options include packages for several Linux distributions, Flatpak, and a Docker service-only setup. Controls vary with GPU generation, driver, and hardware.
For and against
For
- Supports AMD, Nvidia, and Intel GPUs.
- Exports monitoring data as CSV.
- Offers fan curves, power caps, and clock controls.
- Profiles can respond to processes or gamemode status.
- Includes an OpenTelemetry metrics exporter.
Against
- Controls vary by GPU, driver, and hardware.
- Remote TCP management lacks authentication and encryption.
- TCP listening is disabled by default.
The verdict
LACT combines GPU monitoring, tuning controls, and service-based configuration for Linux systems. Review its hardware-specific controls and remote-management security details before using the API over TCP.
Who it suits
LACT suits Linux users who want to monitor and configure supported GPUs, including through a headless service. The controls available depend on the GPU generation, driver, and hardware.
