KubeVela
What it is
KubeVela is an open-source software delivery platform for deploying and operating applications across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. It represents deployment plans as workflows that can run with CI/CD or GitOps systems and be extended with CUE. For releases across clusters and clouds, it supports progressive rollout, canary and blue-green strategies, continuous verification, and placement strategies. Security features include LDAP integration, multi-cluster authentication and authorization, fine-grained RBAC modules, and automated observability. The project lists integrations with Kubernetes, Helm, FluxCD, ArgoCD, Git, Harbor, JFrog, Dex, Prometheus, Loki, Grafana, Vector, Terraform, Crossplane, Istio, and ClickHouse. Cloud resources can be used as built-in components or integrated through Terraform and Crossplane. KubeVela installs standalone on Linux, macOS, or Windows, or can run on an existing Kubernetes cluster. VelaD is intended for local development and quick demos; the documentation recommends managed Kubernetes services for production. Its application access control uses native Kubernetes authentication and RBAC objects. KubeVela is a CNCF incubation project.
For and against
For
- Open-source, self-hosted Kubernetes control plane.
- Supports canary and blue-green rollouts.
- Workflows can run with CI/CD or GitOps.
- Integrates with Terraform and Crossplane.
- Standalone installation supports Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Against
- VelaD is intended for local development and demos.
- Production documentation recommends managed Kubernetes services.
- Automatic rollback is not supported.
The verdict
KubeVela offers workflow-based application delivery, multiple rollout strategies, and a broad set of integrations. Consider its managed-Kubernetes recommendation when planning production deployment.
Who it suits
KubeVela may suit teams delivering applications across Kubernetes clusters or cloud environments through CI/CD or GitOps workflows. Its standalone VelaD option is positioned for local development and demos, while production use is directed toward managed Kubernetes services.
