Kover
What it is
Kover is a free, Apache-2.0-licensed toolkit maintained by Kotlin for collecting test coverage from Kotlin code compiled for the JVM and Android. The toolset includes Gradle and Maven plugins, a command-line interface, offline instrumentation, a JVM agent, and a features artifact. The Gradle plugin produces HTML and XML reports and supports coverage verification rules, with line, instruction, and branch coverage types. It works with Kotlin JVM, Kotlin Android, Kotlin Multiplatform, and the com.android.kotlin.multiplatform.library plugins, including mixed Kotlin and Java sources. JaCoCo can be used as an alternative for measurement and report generation. Kover supports Android build variants and host-test coverage. The Gradle plugin requires Gradle 6.8.3 or later, JVM 1.7 or later for tests, and Android Gradle Plugin 7.0.0 or later. It does not support JavaScript or native targets.
For and against
For
- HTML and XML coverage reports
- Line, instruction, and branch coverage
- Kotlin and Java source support
- Android build-variant coverage
- Apache-2.0 open-source license
Against
- No JavaScript or native Gradle targets
- No coverage from device instrumented tests
- Instrumentation may affect test performance
- Aggregated Plugin is an early prototype
The verdict
Kover provides several coverage collection tools and report formats for JVM and Android-oriented Kotlin projects. Teams should account for its unsupported targets, device-test limitation, and stated version requirements.
Who it suits
Kover suits Kotlin and Java teams measuring JVM or Android test coverage through Gradle, Maven, command-line, or related tooling. It is also relevant to projects needing report formats and coverage gates.
