Knative
What it is
Knative is free, open-source Kubernetes middleware for building, deploying, and managing serverless workloads. Its Serving component runs stateless HTTP services, handling deployment, routing, and scaling. Services can scale down to zero when idle and respond to incoming traffic by scaling up. Serving also supports blue-green deployments, canary releases, and traffic splitting between revisions. Knative Eventing routes asynchronous events with CloudEvents over HTTP, while Knative Functions helps build and deploy stateless functions as containers. Installation documentation describes a local quickstart and production deployment on an existing Kubernetes cluster using YAML or the Knative Operator. It runs on Kubernetes in cloud-provider and on-premises environments, with Linux, macOS, and Windows listed as supported installation platforms. Networking options include Istio, Contour, and Gateway API; messaging integrations include Kafka, RabbitMQ, and NATS. Knative relies on Kubernetes security capabilities such as RBAC and namespace isolation, and recommends securing the routing and event transport components in use.
For and against
For
- Serving scales services to zero when idle.
- Supports blue-green, canary, and split-traffic deployments.
- Eventing routes CloudEvents over HTTP.
- Runs on Kubernetes across cloud and on-premises environments.
Against
- Requires an existing Kubernetes cluster for production installation.
- Alpha features may change incompatibly or be dropped.
- Security depends partly on Kubernetes and chosen transport components.
The verdict
Knative provides Kubernetes-native components for services, events, and containerized functions, with several deployment and traffic-management options. Teams should account for Kubernetes operations and treat alpha features as suitable only for short-lived testing clusters.
Who it suits
Knative suits developers and platform teams building or operating serverless workloads on Kubernetes. It may also fit teams that need event routing, function deployment, or traffic management across cloud and on-premises clusters.
