Kingfisher
New York, NY, USA
What it is
Kingfisher is a free, Apache-2.0-licensed tool for finding leaked credentials and supporting follow-up work. It scans files, directories, Git repositories and history, archives, SQLite databases, Python bytecode, Docker images, cloud storage, and developer platforms. Documented integrations include GitHub, GitLab, Azure Repos, Bitbucket, Gitea, Hugging Face, AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage, Docker, Jira, Confluence, Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Postman. The project describes a multithreaded Vectorscan engine and supports Betterleaks TOML and Kingfisher YAML rules. Results can be viewed in human-readable form or exported as TOON, JSON, JSONL, SARIF, BSON, or HTML. A local report viewer can combine and deduplicate Kingfisher, SARIF, Gitleaks, and TruffleHog reports. The tool can validate whether credentials are live, map their blast radius, and support revocation for credentials with supported provider workflows. Live checks make provider API requests, so they should be used only with authorization to inspect the target account. Kingfisher supports Linux, macOS, Windows, and self-hosted use.
For and against
For
- Scans repositories, archives, databases, cloud storage, and platforms.
- Supports custom detection rules in two formats.
- Exports reports in JSON, SARIF, HTML, and other formats.
- Pre-commit hooks can block commits with findings.
Against
- Live validation and blast-radius checks call provider APIs.
- Revocation is limited to supported credential workflows.
- Provider API checks require authorization.
The verdict
Kingfisher combines broad secret scanning with report handling and selected credential-response capabilities. Its live checks and revocation workflows have provider and authorization limits to consider.
Who it suits
It suits security and development teams scanning code, repositories, storage, or connected platforms for leaked secrets. Teams can also use its pre-commit hooks to scan staged changes and block commits when findings produce a non-zero exit code.
