jBPM
What it is
jBPM is free, open-source Java software for business automation, covering processes, tasks, decision tables, and business rules. It is delivered as Java libraries embedded in a service rather than as a standalone server, and executes BPMN 2.0 processes. Human tasks support pluggable lifecycles, assignment strategies, and deadlines. Rule tasks can call DRL rules or DMN decisions evaluated by Drools in the same service. Long-running workflows can retain state, use timers and signals, correlate messages, track service-level agreements, and migrate running instances to a new process version. Persistence options include PostgreSQL and other JDBC databases, MongoDB, Infinispan, RocksDB, and the filesystem. Web and IDE modelers provide drag-and-drop process creation. For Apache KIE 10, Kogito on Quarkus or Spring Boot is the documented service approach.
For and against
For
- Free Apache License 2.0 software
- BPMN 2.0 process execution
- Pluggable human-task lifecycles
- Multiple persistence choices
- Web and IDE modelers
Against
- Requires an IDE, JDK, and Maven
- Runs as embedded libraries, not a server
- Apache KIE is still incubating
The verdict
jBPM offers a broad workflow engine for Java services, including durable processes and integrated decisions. Its embedded architecture and build-time model compilation fit teams managing their own deployments.
Who it suits
It suits developers building self-hosted Java workflow services that need BPMN processes, human tasks, rules, and durable execution. Teams should be comfortable with Java tooling and the listed prerequisites.
