Japa
What it is
Japa is a free testing framework for Node.js backend applications and libraries, with support for JSON API and browser testing. It requires Node.js 18 or later and works only with the ES module system. Tests run from a configured entry point with Node.js or Bun because Japa has no separate CLI. You can arrange tests into suites and groups, use lifecycle hooks and filtering, and run asynchronous or dataset-driven cases. Assertion choices include Chai-based assert, Jest-style expect, and TypeScript type assertions. Snapshot testing is supported, and coverage reporting is documented through c8 or nyc. The API client handles endpoints returning JSON, XML, HTML, or plain text, while its OpenAPI plugin checks responses against specifications. Browser testing uses a Playwright-based client with browser and context management, built-in assertions, and tracing options. An official VS Code extension runs tests from the editor, and an AdonisJS preset is available.
For and against
For
- Free plan available
- Supports API and browser testing
- Dataset-driven and asynchronous tests
- OpenAPI response checking
- Official VS Code extension
Against
- Requires Node.js 18 or later
- ES module system only
- No separate CLI
- No parallel execution
The verdict
Japa brings backend, API, and browser testing into one Node.js-focused framework. Its ES module requirement, existing-project setup, and lack of a separate CLI are important fit considerations.
Who it suits
Japa suits developers testing Node.js backend projects, libraries, JSON APIs, or browser behavior. It is intended for existing Node.js projects rather than frontend applications.
