Invariant
What it is
Invariant validates network configurations against connectivity and security rules using a cross-vendor digital twin. It builds its model from configuration files, so assessment does not require direct access to routers or switches. Teams can write policies in YAML and test network snapshots, including proposed changes before deployment, to identify policy violations and failures affecting critical flows. Scheduled scans can produce incident alerts with virtual traceroutes and virtual route-table differences. Invariant offers web and API access, plus a CLI and SDK for automation. Listed integrations include Jenkins, GitHub Actions, LibreNMS, Netmiko, Aerleon, Capirca, IPAM, and SIEM workflows. Supported vendors include Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, and AWS; listed protocols include BGP, OSPF, IPSec, NAT, policy-based routing, VPN, ACL, and VLAN. The Basic account is free with effectively no usage limits. Higher tiers add SSO, larger device counts, and preview features.
For and against
For
- Free Basic account with effectively no usage limits
- Works from configuration files without device access
- YAML policies support pre-change validation
- Scheduled scans create incident alerts
- CLI, SDK, and API support automation
Against
- SSO requires a higher tier
- Largest device counts require higher tiers
- Fully on-premise retention requires contacting Invariant
The verdict
Invariant provides configuration-based network validation, policy testing, and scheduled monitoring across multiple vendors and protocols. Its free Basic account covers core use, while larger deployments and SSO are reserved for higher tiers.
Who it suits
Invariant is aimed at network and security operators assessing configurations and planning safer changes. It suits teams needing policy checks, scheduled scans, and automation through APIs or integrations.
