Higress
What it is
Higress is an open-source API gateway for governing AI services, MCP servers, and cloud-native traffic. Its AI Gateway routes model APIs and MCP services through centralized access and management, and Higress says it supports more than 100 mainstream large language models. It provides model routing, protocol conversion, load balancing, and fallback, as well as HTTP-to-MCP conversion and proxying for native MCP services. Traffic controls include token-based quotas and rate limits, API key pool rotation, and consumer authentication. Caching can reuse inference results for similar or repeated questions, while listed protections cover prompt attacks, sensitive content, data privacy, and output filtering. The broader gateway combines traffic, microservice, and security functions with service exposure and API lifecycle management. It supports HTTP, HTTP2, HTTPS, GRPC, GRPCS, TCP, and Dubbo, along with Kubernetes Ingress and Gateway API. The free Community Edition is self-hosted and includes community support and documentation; users handle stability and performance. Higress also offers local Docker deployment without signup and is identified as a CNCF Sandbox project.
For and against
For
- Supports unified access to more than 100 language models.
- Provides model routing, load balancing, and fallback.
- Includes rate limits and consumer authentication.
- Custom Wasm plugins can use Go, Rust, or JavaScript.
Against
- Community Edition is self-hosted.
- Users handle Community Edition stability and performance.
- Community Edition support is limited to community support and documentation.
The verdict
Higress combines AI gateway controls with broader API traffic and lifecycle management features. The free Community Edition gives users deployment control, with stability and performance responsibilities remaining with the user.
Who it suits
Higress suits teams managing AI APIs, MCP services, or cloud-native traffic that want a self-hosted gateway. Its plugin options and Kubernetes integrations may also fit teams building around those environments.
