HID Remapper
What it is
HID Remapper is an open-source hardware adapter that changes how USB input devices behave for desktop computing and gaming accessibility. It supports button and axis remapping, layers, macros, and custom behaviors. The remapping runs on the adapter, not through special software on the connected computer, and settings are saved on the device. It accepts standard USB HID devices such as mice, keyboards, many game controllers, wireless receivers, and USB MIDI controllers. In mouse and keyboard mode, it works with hosts running Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS; mobile devices that support regular USB keyboards and mice may also work. Setup uses a WebHID configuration website that works only in desktop Chrome, though Edge and Opera may also work. The manual says Nintendo Switch works out of the box, while other modern consoles generally need extra effort or adapters. For accessibility, external buttons or switches can connect through GPIO pins, and custom board v6 has 3.5 mm jacks for adaptive buttons. Certain devices can be overclocked up to 1000 Hz. The firmware and optional custom hardware are open source.
For and against
For
- Remapping runs on the device and saves configuration there
- Supports layers, macros, and custom behaviors
- Can connect external switches through GPIO pins
- Firmware and optional custom hardware are open source
Against
- Configuration requires desktop Chrome or possibly Edge or Opera
- Some USB devices may have incompatible HID descriptors
- Other modern consoles may need extra effort or adapters
- It does not pass through webcams or microphones
The verdict
HID Remapper provides hardware-based remapping for many standard USB input devices, with options for macros and adaptive switches. Check device and console compatibility first, and note that configuration requires a supported desktop browser.
Who it suits
HID Remapper may suit people who want to change USB input mappings for desktop use, gaming, or accessibility setups. It is also relevant to users who need hardware-based remapping without software running on the connected computer.
