Helix
What it is
Helix is a free text editor built for terminal use on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its editing model centers on multiple selections, allowing commands to act on several selections together; it also supports multi-cursor editing and macro recording. Tree-sitter integration provides syntax highlighting, indentation calculation, and code navigation. Built-in language server support offers completion, go to definition, documentation, and diagnostics, though users need to install language servers for their preferred programming languages. Helix can navigate and select functions, classes, comments, and syntax tree nodes. Built-in tools include a fuzzy finder for files and symbols, project-wide search, themes, automatic bracket pairing, and surround integration. Written in Rust, it can run in a terminal, over SSH, or in tmux. Settings can be global or project-specific, including themes, keybindings, and language-specific options; language servers and formatters can be configured through languages.toml files. Helix does not currently have a plugin system, although one is intended for the future. Its site describes a GUI frontend as a future possibility.
For and against
For
- Commands can edit multiple selections at once
- Includes macro recording
- Tree-sitter supports highlighting and code navigation
- Built-in fuzzy finder and project-wide search
- Runs in terminals, SSH, and tmux
Against
- No plugin system currently
- Users must install language servers
- Indentation definitions cover only certain languages
- GUI frontend is only a future possibility
The verdict
Helix combines terminal-focused editing with syntax-aware navigation and language server features across three desktop operating systems. Its missing plugin system and dependence on separately installed language servers are important considerations.
Who it suits
Helix suits programmers who prefer terminal editing and want multiple-selection workflows with language server features. Users should be comfortable installing language servers and working without a current plugin system.
