Hangover
What it is
Hangover is a free Linux project for running x86_64 and x86_32 Windows applications on aarch64 Wine. Instead of emulating a complete Wine installation, it uses emulator DLLs to emulate the application. The project says this design can run applications natively without emulation and does not require 32-bit Unix libraries. Windows and Wine system calls, as well as Unix-related work, run outside the emulator. For 64-bit applications, Hangover uses the ARM64EC ABI with FEX. Its main focus is x86_64 and i386 Windows applications on ARM64 Linux, though ARM32 Windows applications can also run on x86_64 Linux. The README lists FEX and Box64 integrations. Packages are listed for Debian 11, 12, and 13 and Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04, 24.04, and 25.10, with a separate pointer to Termux packages. Wayland is not enabled by default; configuration instructions are provided for using it instead of X11. DXVK requires a Vulkan 1.3 driver with features that may be unavailable on many ARM64 devices. PPC64le is no longer supported. Hangover is licensed under LGPL-2.1, and build instructions are available.
For and against
For
- Uses emulator DLLs instead of a full Wine installation.
- Does not require 32-bit Unix libraries.
- Packages cover listed Debian and Ubuntu releases.
- Build instructions are available.
Against
- Wayland is not enabled by default.
- DXVK requires a Vulkan 1.3 driver with specified features.
- PPC64le is no longer supported.
- ARM32 Windows applications are listed for x86_64 Linux.
The verdict
Hangover targets running Windows software across specified Linux and processor combinations, with several package options and emulator integrations. Check the architecture and graphics requirements for the intended workload first.
Who it suits
Hangover suits Linux users who need to run supported Windows application architectures on ARM64 Linux, or ARM32 Windows applications on x86_64 Linux. Users considering Wayland or DXVK should account for the listed configuration and driver constraints.
