Greenmask
What it is
Greenmask is a free, open-source utility for logical database backups, anonymization, synthetic data generation, and restoration. It currently supports PostgreSQL and can store backups in local directories or S3-like remote storage. Deterministic and random transformers, dynamic parameters, masking, and domain-based transformations let teams configure how data is transformed. Configuration validation can show warnings along with data and schema differences; settings can also carry across partitions of partitioned tables. Greenmask supports parallel dumping and restoration, as well as parallel compression with pgzip. Its logical-dump approach does not require changes to the existing database schema, and its dumps can be restored with pg_restore. It can connect with CI/CD systems for automated anonymization and restoration. The utility can be self-hosted on Linux or macOS, with installation options including Docker, Homebrew, an install script, or a source build. A Docker Playground with sample databases is available. Support for MySQL and MongoDB is in development; Windows is not supported yet.
For and against
For
- Free and open source
- Supports anonymization and synthetic data generation
- Can run parallel dumps and restorations
- Integrates with CI/CD workflows
Against
- Currently supports PostgreSQL only
- Windows is not supported yet
- Large images or many layers can cause out-of-memory errors
- Error handling is limited
The verdict
Greenmask combines PostgreSQL logical backups with configurable transformations and restoration workflows. Its current database support is limited to PostgreSQL, and the maker says Windows is not supported yet.
Who it suits
It suits data engineers, DevOps teams, developers, and machine learning teams who need PostgreSQL backup, masking, or test-data workflows. Healthcare and finance organizations are also among its intended users.
