Greenmask
What it is
Greenmask is a free, open-source utility for logical database dumps, anonymization, synthetic data generation, and restoration. PostgreSQL 11 and later are fully supported; MySQL support is described as in progress and beta. Database subsetting can produce smaller development databases while preserving referential integrity, including cyclic and polymorphic references. Transformation options include deterministic and random methods, dynamic parameters, conditional rules, and inheritance across partitions and foreign-key references. Users can create custom transformers that communicate through standard input and output, or use predefined templates. Storage backends include local directories, S3-compatible storage, Azure Blob Storage, and SSH/SFTP. Greenmask uses PostgreSQL’s pg_dump and pg_restore utilities for schema dumping and restoration, and its dumps can be restored with pg_restore. It is designed for CI/CD workflows that automate anonymization and restoration. The project describes its stateless, in-flight design as transforming data before persistence without requiring unmasked datasets to be persistently stored in its normal workflow. Installation scripts support Linux and macOS; Windows is not supported yet.
For and against
For
- Free and open-source
- Subsetting preserves referential integrity
- Supports multiple transformation types and custom transformers
- Storage includes S3-compatible and Azure Blob options
- Designed for CI/CD automation
Against
- MySQL support is still in progress and beta
- Windows is not supported yet
- Installation scripts support Linux and macOS
The verdict
Greenmask combines database dumping, transformation, subsetting, and restoration for PostgreSQL workflows. MySQL remains beta, and Windows is not supported, so confirm that its database and operating-system coverage fits your setup.
Who it suits
Greenmask suits teams that need to anonymize, subset, or generate data for PostgreSQL development and CI/CD workflows. It may fit teams that can run a self-hosted utility on Linux or macOS.
