Graphile Worker
What it is
Graphile Worker is an open-source job worker that stores jobs in PostgreSQL and runs them on Node.js, so background work does not hold up application responses. Jobs run at least once, and failures trigger automatic retries with exponential backoff. Recurring tasks can follow crontab-like schedules with optional backfill; other controls include de-duplication by unique job_key and batch jobs that append data to already enqueued jobs. The feature list says execution typically starts in under 3ms through PostgreSQL LISTEN/NOTIFY. It supports standalone and embedded deployment, including running in the same Node.js process as an application server. The current version requires PostgreSQL 12+ and Node 22.18+. Packages are available through npm, Yarn or pnpm, though global installation is not recommended. The connection documentation describes SSL-encrypted PostgreSQL connections and CA certificate configuration. The project is free and open source under the MIT license. Worker Pro adds crashed-worker recovery and live migration to new Worker versions. Community help is available through Graphile Discord, with professional support contracts also offered.
For and against

Against
- Requires PostgreSQL 12+ and Node 22.18+
- Deployment is self-hosted
- Global package installation is not recommended
The verdict
Graphile Worker offers PostgreSQL-backed job processing with scheduling, retries and embedded deployment options. Check its database and Node.js requirements before adopting it.
Who it suits
Graphile Worker suits developers building Node.js applications around PostgreSQL who need scheduled background jobs and retry behavior. Its maker describes it for regular organizations, not as a replacement for dedicated queues at Facebook scale.
