Frodo
What it is
Frodo is a portable Commodore 64 emulator for Linux, macOS, and Windows, focused on reproducing the computer’s special graphical effects. It runs C64 disk and tape software and many game cartridges, with support for formats including D64, G64, T64, TAP, X64, and LYNX. Users can choose its cycle-exact regular mode or Frodo Lite, a less compatible mode intended to run better on slower machines. The official site lists version 4.5, which adds Datasette TAP emulation and support for banked cartridges such as Ocean, Fun Play, Power Play, Super Games, and Simons' BASIC. TAP emulation is not available in Frodo Lite. Version 4.5 can also start disk and tape images, cartridges, and C64 BASIC program files from the command line. Frodo detects connected controllers for joystick ports and can map additional buttons to C64 keys. Display settings include windowed or fullscreen mode and initial window size. The software is free under the GPL-2.0 license; version 4.5's changed snapshot format cannot read snapshots from earlier versions.
For and against
For
- Free and licensed under GPL-2.0.
- Supports disk, tape, and cartridge software.
- Offers regular and Lite emulation modes.
- Can detect controllers and map buttons to C64 keys.
- Supports windowed and fullscreen display.
Against
- Frodo Lite is less compatible.
- TAP emulation is unavailable in Frodo Lite.
- Version 4.5 cannot read earlier snapshot files.
The verdict
Frodo offers broad C64 media support and a choice between cycle-exact emulation and a mode for slower machines. Check the snapshot-format limitation before moving files from earlier versions.
Who it suits
Frodo suits people who want to run Commodore 64 software on Linux, macOS, or Windows. Its Lite mode is intended for slower machines, though it is less compatible.
