FocusFusion
What it is
FocusFusion is a free Windows app that combines photographs taken at different focus distances into one image with greater depth of field. It provides depthmap and wavelet focus-stacking algorithms, as well as automatic alignment and manual retouching. Depthmap requires images ordered from front to back or back to front, and can struggle with translucent subjects or complex overlaps. Wavelet can handle images in any order, but may add noise, produce artifacts at sharp brightness transitions, or impair alignment. Processing uses a minimum of 16-bit precision per channel. Supported inputs are TIFF up to 48 bpp, 16-bit-per-channel JPEG XR, and classic 8-bit JPEG; RAW files are not supported. Its clone-based retouching tool offers adjustable brush size, hardness, and opacity, with cloning at 16-bit quality. FocusFusion is distributed through the Windows Store. It requires Windows 10, an SSE4.1 CPU made after 2008, and at least 8 GB of memory; 16 GB is recommended for deeper stacks or larger DSLR images.
For and against
For
- Offers depthmap and wavelet stacking methods.
- Processes images at 16-bit precision or higher.
- Includes automatic alignment and manual retouching.
- Clone retouching offers adjustable brush controls.
- Free Windows app.
Against
- RAW files are not supported.
- Requires Windows 10 and an SSE4.1 CPU.
- Requires at least 8 GB of memory.
- Depthmap needs images ordered by focus distance.
The verdict
FocusFusion provides two stacking methods and retouching tools, with distinct tradeoffs in image ordering, noise, artifacts, and alignment. Check the Windows requirements and supported input formats before choosing it.
Who it suits
FocusFusion suits Windows users combining photographs made at different focus distances, particularly when working with supported TIFF, JPEG XR, or JPEG files. The stated workflow recommendations include a tripod with focus bracketing or a macro rail and consistent exposure and contrast.
