FlowViewer
What it is
FlowViewer is free software for analyzing Netflow data exported from an organization’s network devices. It provides an interface to Carnegie Mellon’s SiLK software and also supports the legacy flow-tools collector. Its tools divide the work among text reports in FlowViewer, graphical reports in FlowGrapher, and longer-term traffic monitoring in FlowMonitor. The site lists Netflow versions 5 and 9, including IPv6, and filters for address, port, interface, autonomous system, TOS, TCP flags, protocol, and next hop. Users can choose from over 30 reports and save reports and filters. FlowGrapher charts bits, flows, and packets per second over a selected period. FlowMonitor supplies RRD graphs for filtered traffic, with viewing periods from 24 hours to three years. Multiple dashboards can give groups such as Security and Operations distinct live views. Deployment is on a dedicated Unix server or virtual appliance, and the free software requires a Unix server. Paid services are also listed: custom support priced on request, billed per hour with a four-hour minimum; router configuration at $500, paid once; training at $500, paid once; and installation at $750, paid once.
For and against
For
- Free software plan costs nothing
- Offers over 30 reports
- Filters by address, port, protocol, and other fields
- Monitoring views span 24 hours to three years
Against
- Requires a Unix server
- Installation, training, and router configuration are paid services
- Custom support has a four-hour minimum
The verdict
FlowViewer brings reporting, graphing, and monitoring into one toolset for network flow analysis. Its Unix server requirement and separately priced support services are key deployment considerations.
Who it suits
FlowViewer suits teams that need to inspect network flow data through reports, graphs, and longer-term monitoring. It is aimed at organizations able to deploy it on a Unix server or virtual appliance.
