FishNet

What it is

FishNet is a networking solution for Unity games with a client-server model and a server-authoritative design. It supports dedicated servers, while developers can also run a server and client together during development and testing. Teams can choose a server host, including self-hosting or player hosting, and the free plan has no CCU caps or paywalls. Its high-level API synchronizes game state, logic, and objects; events and inheritance provide lower-level options. Built-in client-side prediction includes desynchronization smoothing and Rigidbody prediction, and Addressables support covers network scenes and prefabs. Other listed tools include buffered remote calls, area-of-interest controls, configurable SyncTypes, tick-based timing, and broadcasts. Customizable authenticators can require clients to pass authentication before communicating with a game server. Communication is unencrypted by default; FishyUnityTransport can enable DTLS for UDP or TLS for WebSocket. FishNet Pro costs $50 once and adds lag compensation and automatic removal of sensitive server logic from client builds. Prediction collider components currently support primitive shapes such as boxes, spheres, and circles.

For and against

For

  • Free plan has no CCU caps or paywalls.
  • Supports dedicated and developer-run servers.
  • Built-in prediction includes desynchronization smoothing.
  • Addressables support covers network scenes and prefabs.

Against

  • Communication is unencrypted by default.
  • Prediction colliders support primitive shapes only.
  • Community integrations are not officially maintained or guaranteed.

The verdict

FishNet combines server-authoritative networking with developer-selected hosting and a broad set of networking tools. Check its primitive-only prediction collider limit and enable transport encryption if needed.

Who it suits

FishNet suits Unity developers building multiplayer games who want to choose their hosting model and use built-in prediction tools. Teams needing Pro features can buy them for $50 once.
