FBX2glTF
What it is
FBX2glTF is a free command-line utility that converts Autodesk FBX 3D assets to glTF 2.0. It can write a glTF representation or a single binary .glb file, and can embed buffers as data URIs. Precompiled binaries are provided for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. An npm package exposes a Promise-based Node API with platform binaries.
The converter bakes FBX animations into the output and supports blend shapes; complex rigs can produce especially large files. For materials, metallic-roughness PBR conversion supports Stingray PBS, and emissive constants and textures, occlusion maps, and normal maps transfer automatically. Optional Draco compression can reduce mesh size, but the viewer must support KHR_draco_geometry_compression. The project uses a 3-clause BSD license. Its build system works only with FBX SDK version 2019.2. The initial v0.9.0 release was identified as beta because the tool had not been exposed to a wide range of FBX variations. The project invites users to report unexpected behavior and crashes through GitHub issues.
For and against
For
- Free under a 3-clause BSD license
- Binaries listed for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux
- Can output .glb or glTF
- Supports blend shapes and baked animation
Against
- Build system supports FBX SDK 2019.2 only
- Baked animation can create very large files
- Draco output requires a compatible viewer
- Initial v0.9.0 release was beta
The verdict
FBX2glTF offers multiple output options and material-transfer support for FBX-to-glTF conversion. Check the SDK restriction and possible animation file sizes before fitting it into a workflow.
Who it suits
FBX2glTF suits developers and 3D workflows that need to convert FBX assets to glTF 2.0 from the command line or through Node. Its SDK and animation constraints are worth considering for complex projects.
