Expertiza
What it is
Expertiza is a web application for instructors to create assignments and for students to submit and peer-review learning objects. Submissions can include articles, code, websites, URLs, and wiki pages. Student tools cover submitting and reviewing work, forming teams, and signing up for topics; the system also supports rubric scoring and moderation. Reviewer anonymity is one-way, and review allocation is manual. The project says Expertiza is used in selected NC State courses and by professors at several other colleges and universities. Documentation covers local use, production deployment, and development environments for Ubuntu/Debian, macOS, and Linux RHEL; developers need a JVM. A documented Moodle LTI integration can launch Expertiza assignments from Moodle and pass grades to the Moodle gradebook. Moodle setup requires an administrator to register and activate Expertiza as an external tool provider. The project also describes a generic synchronization interface intended for LMS platforms such as Blackboard or Canvas. A 2024 project page says the implemented Moodle single sign-on did not include deadline or course-grade synchronization, and identifies the initial integration as LTI 1.1 while recommending consideration of LTI 1.3. The repository lists an MIT license; the project pages do not state a commercial price or subscription plan.
