eXist-db
Lenzkirch, Germany
What it is
eXist-db is a free, open-source NoSQL document database and application platform built around XML. Its native engine stores XML documents and other textual or binary data without requiring a database schema. The software implements XQuery 3.1, though some functions and features are unsupported, and supports RESTXQ for deploying RESTful services from XQuery annotations. A browser-based IDE includes syntax coloring, code completion and error checking for application artifacts. Its interfaces include REST-style HTTP, SOAP, XML-RPC and WebDAV; its implementation-specific full-text search uses Apache Lucene and does not support the W3C XQuery and XPath Full Text 3.0 specification. Security extends Unix permissions with access control lists and can use external authentication realms. The Java binding is disabled by default because enabling it can allow system inspection or destructive server code. eXist-db is self-hosted, can run as a background service, and has installers for Linux, macOS and Windows. Requirements include Java 8 for versions 3.x–6.x or Java 21 for version 7.x, about 500 MB of disk space and at least 512 MB of memory.
