What it is
Ente Auth is a free authenticator for storing TOTP and HOTP two-factor codes. It can sync codes among mobile, desktop, and web devices with end-to-end encryption, and account users can use encrypted cloud backups. Ente says the app is open source and its cryptography has been externally audited. It supports native imports from services including 2FAS Authenticator, Aegis, Bitwarden, Google Authenticator, LastPass, Proton, and Raivo OTP. Search, tags, pins, notes, multi-select, and custom sorting help organize codes. Sharing links expire after 2, 5, or 10 minutes. Users can export codes as plain text, encrypted files, or HTML QR codes compatible with Google Authenticator. Auth also works without an account, but codes in that mode remain local and are not synced or backed up to Ente. App lock options include device lock, a 4-digit PIN, or a password; these protect the interface, not the underlying data through re-encryption. It is available on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, Windows, and web.
For and against
For
- Free plan with no ads or spying
- Syncs codes across mobile, desktop, and web
- Supports TOTP and HOTP codes
- Imports from several named authenticator apps
- Offers multiple code export formats
Against
- Offline codes are not synced or backed up
- App lock does not re-encrypt Auth data
The verdict
Ente Auth combines code organization, import and export, and encrypted cross-device sync in a free app. Its account-free offline mode keeps codes local, and its app lock protects the interface rather than re-encrypting data.
Who it suits
It suits people who want a free authenticator across phone, computer, or web, with options to import and export codes. People who want Ente backups should use an account; offline, account-free codes remain local.
