Ecere SDK
What it is
Ecere SDK is a free, open-source development kit for the eC programming language, released under the New BSD license. Its IDE combines a source editor with auto-completion and syntax highlighting, project management, a visual debugger, and a form designer. The runtime includes a GUI toolkit, 2D and 3D graphics APIs supporting Direct3D and OpenGL, and services for networking, files, threading, synchronization, and date and time handling. Database options include Ecere RDBMS and SQLite drivers, encrypted SQLite using SQLCipher, and a basic Oracle driver. Other components cover audio, scanning, SSL sockets, and tiled 2D game graphics. The project describes eC as a C89 superset that can use C libraries directly; bgen can generate object-oriented bindings for C, C++, and Python from eC libraries. Builds are supported on Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and FreeBSD, while executables can be deployed to Android and the web. Documentation is still developing: the programming guide is a work in progress, and the API documentor has limited descriptive information.
For and against
For
- Free and open source under the New BSD license
- IDE includes debugger and project management
- Runtime includes GUI, 2D, and 3D APIs
- Executables can target Android and the web
- Offers SQLite, encrypted SQLite, and Oracle drivers
Against
- Programming guide remains a work in progress
- API documentor has limited descriptive information
The verdict
Ecere SDK brings development tools, runtime services, and multiple deployment targets together for eC projects. Documentation is a notable consideration, with the guide unfinished and API descriptions limited.
Who it suits
Ecere SDK suits developers building eC applications who need an IDE, runtime libraries, and deployment options across desktop, Android, or web. Its C interoperability may also suit projects using C libraries.
