dnSpyEx
What it is
dnSpyEx is a free, GPLv3-licensed debugger and .NET assembly editor for working with assemblies when source code is unavailable. It can debug .NET Framework, .NET, and Unity game assemblies using breakpoints, tracepoints, conditional and exception breakpoints, and multiple-process debugging. Editing tools cover metadata and methods or classes in C# and Visual Basic, as well as low-level IL method bodies. C# and Visual Basic decompilers use the ILSpy engine; the project also lists BAML decompilation and disassembly. Assembly search and analysis tools can locate class and method usage and callers, while bookmarks and project export help organize work. A public API supports extensions, and a C# Interactive window can control or script the app. The releases page lists v6.6.0 as the latest stable release, with a .NET 10 distribution. Its notes discuss Wine compatibility adjustments for Linux use, not native Linux support. Dynamic methods cannot be debugged because of CLR limitations. Unity game debugging also requires the dnSpyEx Unity Mono repository.
For and against
For
- Debugs .NET Framework, .NET, and Unity game assemblies.
- Edits C#, Visual Basic, and IL methods.
- Includes C# and Visual Basic decompilers.
- Supports conditional and exception breakpoints.
- Free and licensed under GPLv3.
Against
- Dynamic methods cannot be debugged.
- Linux use is via Wine; native Linux support is not described.
- Unity debugging requires the separate Unity Mono repository.
The verdict
dnSpyEx brings debugging, assembly editing, decompilation, and analysis into one tool for .NET work. Linux users should note the Wine-based support described in the release notes, and dynamic methods are outside its debugging capability.
Who it suits
dnSpyEx suits developers who need to inspect, edit, decompile, or debug .NET assemblies without source code. It may also fit users working with Unity game assemblies, provided they use the additional Unity Mono repository.
