DevPod

What it is

DevPod creates reproducible developer environments in separate containers described through devcontainer.json. Environments can run on a local computer, a reachable remote machine, or public or private cloud infrastructure. DevPod runs on the user's computer without a server backend and is described as open-source and extensible. It supports VS Code and the full JetBrains suite, while other IDEs can connect through SSH. Maintained providers include Docker, Kubernetes, SSH, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and DigitalOcean; users can also add providers from GitHub, a URL, or a local provider.yaml file. Other capabilities include prebuilds, automatic shutdown during inactivity, and Git and Docker credential synchronization. Git HTTPS, Git SSH, and Docker registry credentials can be forwarded into development containers, while machine providers use secure tunnels such as AWS Instance Connect, Google Cloud IAP, and Azure Bastion. Port forwarding requires an IDE or SSH connection because the agent's SSH server starts with that session. DevPod is free and open source. Desktop downloads are available for macOS Silicon and Intel, Windows, and Linux; the CLI is available for macOS, Windows, and Linux AMD or ARM.

For and against

For

  • Runs locally without a server backend
  • Works with local, remote, and cloud providers
  • Supports VS Code and the full JetBrains suite
  • Free and open source

Against

  • Port forwarding requires an IDE or SSH connection
  • Non-trivial CLI commands send basic telemetry events

The verdict

DevPod offers a client-side way to define and use reproducible development environments across multiple providers. Keep its session-dependent port forwarding and CLI telemetry in mind.

Who it suits

DevPod suits developers who want repeatable container-based environments across local, remote, or cloud machines. It is also relevant to teams using VS Code, JetBrains, or SSH-connected IDEs.
