DeepFilterNet
What it is
DeepFilterNet is a free, open-source speech enhancement framework for full-band 48 kHz audio that uses deep filtering. Its command-line tool suppresses noise in WAV files, with 48 kHz as its only currently supported sampling rate. A LADSPA plugin provides real-time noise suppression and can work with PipeWire filter chains to create a virtual microphone or audio output, including for apps such as Zoom or Discord. The plugin has a minimum latency of 20 ms from STFT processing, plus any additional delay from the LADSPA host. The Rust command-line tool uses DeepFilterNet2 by default; the Python interface documents DeepFilterNet and DeepFilterNet2. An optional post-filter may slightly over-attenuate very noisy sections. The framework supports Linux, macOS and Windows, although training is tested only under Linux. The Python package installs as deepfilternet, and an optional train extra adds data-loading functionality for Linux training. Training uses HDF5 datasets and a configuration file for train, validation and test sets. Precompiled binaries are provided through GitHub releases, with a Python wheel available through PyPI. The code is licensed under either MIT or Apache License 2.0, at the user's choice.
For and against
For
- Free and open source under MIT or Apache-2.0.
- Includes command-line and real-time plugin options.
- PipeWire chains can create a noise-suppressing virtual microphone.
- Framework supports Linux, macOS and Windows.
- Precompiled binaries and a Python wheel are available.
Against
- Command-line processing currently supports only 48 kHz audio.
- Training is tested only under Linux.
- Plugin minimum latency is 20 ms plus host latency.
- Post-filter may over-attenuate very noisy sections.
The verdict
DeepFilterNet offers both file-based and real-time noise suppression, with a specific 48 kHz audio focus. Users should account for the sampling-rate restriction, plugin latency and Linux-only tested training setup.
Who it suits
DeepFilterNet may suit developers or audio users seeking noise suppression for 48 kHz WAV files or a real-time LADSPA plugin. Its training tools are more relevant to users working with HDF5 datasets on Linux.
