DearMEP
Vienna, Austria
What it is
DearMEP is a free, open-source tool for helping people contact elected representatives in the European Parliament. Users can make a single call or arrange daily or weekly calls, and can also reach politicians by email or social media. DearMEP estimates which representative from a user’s country may be most persuadable, drawing on voting behavior and feedback. NGOs and activists can adapt the software for campaigns or other assemblies, and embed a customizable widget on campaign websites. The widget detects a visitor’s browser language and also lets them select a language manually; campaign URLs need to be added to the instance’s allowed origins. DearMEP provides API documentation for custom integrations. Running a new instance requires an account with 46elks, the project’s calling provider. The project is by digital-rights NGO epicenter.works. It describes its privacy approach as minimizing personal-data processing and following privacy-by-design, privacy-by-default, and GDPR requirements. Its privacy design document notes that some described functionality may not yet be implemented.
