CSharpier
What it is
CSharpier is a free, open-source formatter for C# and XML. It parses files and reprints them using its own formatting rules, with only a few basic options. The project says it supports C# through version 14. Configuration can be stored in .csharpierrc JSON or YAML files or in .editorconfig, covering print width, tabs, indentation, and line endings. CSharpier runs as a .NET tool installed locally for a project or globally. It can check formatting and returns a failing exit code by default when files are unformatted. You can run it as a pre-commit hook, during MSBuild builds, or in CI/CD workflows. Listed editor integrations include Visual Studio 2022, Visual Studio 2019, Visual Studio Code, and Rider, with setup guidance for Neovim, Emacs, and Zed. The CSharpier.Core NuGet package exposes formatting through code. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Files that cannot compile produce error diagnostics instead of being formatted.
For and against
For
- Free open-source .NET tool
- Supports C# through version 14
- Runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Editor plugins and CI integration
- Programmatic NuGet API
Against
- Formatting options are intentionally limited
- Non-compiling code cannot be formatted
- No free trial because it is open source
The verdict
CSharpier offers consistent C# and XML output across editors and automation. Its own formatting philosophy and inability to process non-compiling code may not fit projects needing extensive style controls.
Who it suits
CSharpier suits developers who want opinionated C# and XML formatting in projects, editors, builds, or CI pipelines. It is also useful when formatting checks need a failing exit code.
