CoreBDD
What it is
CoreBDD is a free, open-source behavior-driven development framework for xUnit.net, intended for C# and .NET projects. Tests can be organized as one class per scenario with Given, When, and Then methods, or written in a single method using step delegates. Method-based scenarios support data-driven tests through xUnit InlineData; class-based scenarios do not yet support that feature. Developers can install a .NET project template or add the CoreBDD NuGet package to an existing xUnit test project. An optional global dotnet CLI tool can run tests with Gherkin-style output, scaffold feature and scenario files, and generate tests from Gherkin files or Gherkin files from tests. The optional CoreBDD.SpecGeneration library can create Gherkin feature files from tests, including after a test run. The README links to code snippets for VSCode. CoreBDD is distributed as source in a public GitHub repository and through packages installed with dotnet commands. The repository identifies its license as Apache-2.0, and the framework supports local execution.
For and against
For
- Free and open source under Apache-2.0.
- Supports Gherkin-style test output.
- Offers class-based and method-based scenarios.
- Optional CLI scaffolds and converts test files.
Against
- Class-based scenarios do not support data-driven tests yet.
- The framework is for xUnit.net projects.
- Self-hosted platform only.
The verdict
CoreBDD focuses on behavior-driven testing within xUnit.net, with several ways to write scenarios and optional Gherkin tooling. Its data-driven test support is limited to method-based scenarios.
Who it suits
CoreBDD suits C# and .NET developers using xUnit.net who want to organize tests around behavior and Gherkin. It may also help teams that want optional command-line scaffolding and conversion between tests and feature files.
