Convertpoly
What it is
Convertpoly is a web toolkit for converting, compressing, rendering, and inspecting 3D models. It reads 75 formats and writes 19. Files are processed in the browser on your machine without an upload step, and the tools can continue working after the page loads even when the network disconnects. No installation or account is required. The converter previews a model before saving the result to your downloads folder. Its viewer exposes scene hierarchy, mesh and material details, and texture-map previews, with controls for moving, rotating, scaling, and undoing changes. The renderer exports still images as PNG, WebP, or JPEG and can package multiple frames in a numbered ZIP. Output can reach 8192 pixels per side, subject to GPU allocation. Convertpoly imposes no file-size limit, although browser memory is the practical constraint and the FAQ says tabs generally handle models up to a few hundred megabytes. Some formats do not retain textures or animation. The free plan costs nothing.
For and against
For
- Reads 75 3D formats and writes 19
- Processes files locally without uploads
- Works offline after the page loads
- Viewer includes scene and texture details
- No installation or account required
Against
- Browser memory limits practical model size
- Some formats cannot preserve textures
- OBJ, STL, and PLY do not store animation
- Output depends on available GPU allocation
The verdict
Convertpoly offers a free, local browser workflow for handling many 3D formats, with conversion previews, model inspection, and image rendering. Its practical limits come from browser memory, GPU resources, and format-specific loss of textures or animation.
Who it suits
It suits people who receive 3D files their current software cannot open, as well as users needing browser-based conversion, inspection, or rendering. It is also useful when local or offline processing matters.
