Comtech FX Series WAN Optimization
Chandler, Arizona, United States
What it is
Comtech FX Series WAN Optimization is a self-hosted, hybrid solution for improving broadband quality of experience on high IP traffic links. It is designed for satellite links across GEO, MEO, and LEO, using a Protocol Enhancement Proxy at both ends. The system optimizes, compresses, bonds, balances, and prioritizes traffic. Turbostreaming accelerates file transfers and web browsing, with the datasheet citing over 150 Mbps per user TCP session and up to 600 Mbps file transfer across 500 ms GEO links. It supports transparent Layer 2 and Layer 3 operation, VLAN and MPLS stacks, and L2/L3 VPNs, including overlapping IP address spaces. Mobile backhaul support covers 4G/LTE and 5G traffic in GTP tunnels, with concurrent IPv4 and IPv6. QoS and dynamic shaping classify traffic by several network attributes. Optional features include header, payload, GZIP, and byte-cache compression. FX5020e can bond separate satellite segments. Pricing is on request.
For and against
For
- Supports GEO, MEO, and LEO satellite links
- Accelerates 4G/LTE and 5G GTP traffic
- Offers QoS and dynamic traffic shaping
- FX5020e bonds separate satellite bandwidth segments
- Provides multiple management interfaces
Against
- Pricing is available only on request
- Traffic above license tier passes unaccelerated
- Some redundancy features are unavailable on FX1005ev
The verdict
FX Series combines satellite optimization, traffic management, mobile-backhaul support, and multiple deployment controls. Buyers should match appliance licensing and redundancy availability to their traffic requirements.
Who it suits
It suits ISPs, mobile network operators, satellite service providers, and communications service providers managing satellite or mobile-backhaul traffic. Teams needing appliance management through web, console, CLI, SNMPv3, or NetVue may also consider it.
