Colander
What it is
Colander is a web platform for case management, digital investigations, and shared knowledge building. It organizes evidence and investigative information into cases where team members can collaborate and share findings with other organizations. A graph editor maps artifacts, actors, observables, and events. Through Threatr, users can retrieve intelligence from VirusTotal, MISP, and OTX AlienVault. Colander can collect and sign PiRogue artifacts while tracking integrity and authenticity. Investigators can analyze decrypted network traffic and payloads, decode payloads with CyberChef, apply YARA rules to network traffic, generate data-transmission reports, and create export feeds. A Python 3 library abstracts the REST API and uses an API key from the user profile. The project is open source under the AGPL v3 license, with API, Linux, web, and self-hosted options. Deployment guidance calls for a dedicated server running the latest Debian version, at least 4 cores, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB storage, and a public IP address.
For and against
For
- Case collaboration and evidence tracking
- Graph editor for investigative entities
- Threat intelligence through Threatr
- Network analysis with YARA rules
- Open source AGPL v3 project
Against
- Self-hosted deployment requires a dedicated server
- Recommended setup needs 500 GB storage
- Requires a public IP address
- No on-call scheduling
The verdict
Colander brings case management, graph-based knowledge, evidence handling, and traffic analysis into one open-source platform. Its server requirements and self-hosted deployment model should guide implementation planning.
Who it suits
Colander is intended for civil society groups, digital-rights defenders, researchers, journalists, and regulatory bodies. It suits teams that need shared investigative cases, evidence tracking, and threat-intelligence workflows.
