Cloudera Schema Registry
What it is
Cloudera Schema Registry centrally stores and manages schemas for streaming applications, helping them validate event data and control changes to producer and consumer formats. It supports Avro and JSON schemas, including Avro logical types, with identifiers, versioning, searchable metadata, and configurable backward, forward, full, or no compatibility checks. The REST API handles schema and version management, file import and export, search, aggregation, and Confluent-compatible endpoints. The Kubernetes Operator edition packages Cloudera Runtime Schema Registry as a Helm chart. Integrations include custom NiFi processors and Kafka serializers and deserializers. Schema metadata can use MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle; serializer and deserializer JARs can use local filesystems or HDFS. TLS can protect application, client, OAuth, and database traffic. Secure Kubernetes installation uses authentication, authorization, channel encryption, and OAuth with an external server. The UI is limited to unauthenticated technical previews or development environments because it lacks OAuth login. Pricing is available on request.
For and against
For

- Offers configurable compatibility modes
- REST API includes import, export, and search
- Kubernetes deployment uses a Helm chart
- Supports TLS and OAuth-based secure installation
Against
- Pricing is available only on request
- UI lacks OAuth login
- Secure Kubernetes installation requires Cloudera license access
- Production security use should rely on REST API
The verdict
Cloudera Schema Registry provides centralized schema governance with versioning, compatibility controls, APIs, and deployment integrations. Its UI limitation and licensing prerequisites matter for teams planning secure production deployments.
Who it suits
It suits streaming applications that need shared schema storage, validation, and controlled message-format evolution. Teams deploying on Kubernetes or integrating with NiFi and Kafka can use its documented deployment and integration paths.
