CleanBrowsing
Fully remote; no physical office or headquarters
What it is
CleanBrowsing is a DNS-based content-filtering service that can limit explicit material and categories such as gambling, torrents, gaming, and social media. Its resolver filters fully qualified domain names, so its filtering scope is limited to those names. CleanBrowsing operates an anycast network with more than 50 data centers and says its proprietary machine-learning platform discovers and classifies new domains. DNSCrypt, DNS-over-TLS, and DNS-over-HTTPS are supported by default, and DNSSEC is enforced and validated. Free public filters do not log personally identifiable information tied to DNS requests; paid customers can choose their logging level. Paid filtering adds custom allow and block domains, TLD blocking, profiles with different rules, and an option to block all internet access. Activity logging supports searches by domain, profile, and day. CleanBrowsing offers apps for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android, as well as manual DNS configuration; listed platforms also include Linux, web, routers, ChromeOS, and API. A free plan is available, and paid plans start at $75/yr. Self-service plans do not include a trial.

- Supports DNSCrypt, DNS-over-TLS, and DNS-over-HTTPS.
- DNSSEC is enforced and validated.
- Paid plans include custom allow and block domains.
- Paid plans support device profiles with different rules.
- Offers apps and manual DNS configuration.
Against
- Filtering is limited to fully qualified domain names.
- Self-service plans have no free trial.
- Basic supports up to 25 devices or 3.75 M requests monthly.
- Paid customers must choose a logging level.
The verdict
CleanBrowsing provides DNS filtering with encrypted DNS options, custom rules on paid plans, and apps or manual setup across several platforms. Its domain-level filtering scope and no-trial policy for self-service plans are important constraints to weigh.
Who it suits
It suits households, organizations, and administrators who want DNS-based filtering across devices or networks. Paid plans are relevant for administrators needing custom domain rules, profiles, and activity visibility.
