Cantaloupe
What it is
Cantaloupe is a free, open-source dynamic image server that creates image derivatives on demand from high-resolution source images. It can crop, scale, and rotate images for deep-zoom viewers and on-the-fly thumbnails, and supports all IIIF Image API versions through 3.0. Sources can be drawn from filesystems, HTTP or HTTPS servers, S3, Azure Storage, and relational database BLOBs. Processing options include Java 2D, JAI, TurboJPEG, Kakadu, OpenJPEG, Grok, FFmpeg, and PDFBox. Caching can use a filesystem, Java heap, JDBC, S3, Azure Storage, or Redis. Security options include selective image and text watermarking, image-region redaction, HTTPS, HTTP Basic authentication, and customizable authorization policies. Configuration uses environment variables or a .properties file, and most file changes take effect without restarting. The base requirement is Java 17; optional sources, processors, or caches may add requirements. The project says it has no official Docker image. Its documentation covers production deployment and tuning controls for image scale, pixel size, request threads, and queue length. Questions and comments go to GitHub Discussions, while bug reports and feature requests go to GitHub Issues.
For and against
For
- Free and open source.
- Conforms to IIIF Image API through version 3.0.
- Supports multiple image sources and cache options.
- Includes watermarking, redaction, and authorization controls.
- Most configuration file changes avoid a restart.
Against
- Requires Java 17 at minimum.
- No official Docker image is available.
- Optional components may add requirements.
- No free trial is listed.
The verdict
Cantaloupe offers broad image-source, processing, caching, and security options for a self-hosted image server. Plan for the Java 17 requirement and the lack of an official Docker image.
Who it suits
Cantaloupe suits teams serving high-resolution images that need on-demand derivatives or IIIF support. Its production guidance and tuning controls are relevant to operators managing deployment behavior.
