Boost.Test
What it is
Boost.Test is a C++11/14/17 library for simple program checks, full unit testing, and monitoring program execution. Its BOOST_TEST assertion macro supports comparisons involving floating-point values, collections, and strings. Developers can organize work with self-registering test cases and suites, fixtures, decorators, labels, and dependencies; data-driven and template cases are also covered in its documentation. Decorations can attach descriptions, groups, or dependencies to tests and suites. For failures, assertion context and configurable logging provide diagnostic detail, and output can be produced in XML or JUNIT formats for third-party tools, including continuous integration tools. The library can be used as a header-only package or as a static or shared library. Boost.Test is free under the Boost Software License, Version 1.0, and is listed for Linux and Windows. One limitation to consider is that it has no synchronization mechanism to prevent races when multiple threads call assertion macros. The Boost release page lists Unix source archives and Windows source and binary downloads.
For and against
For
- Checks floats, collections, and strings
- Supports fixtures, suites, labels, and dependencies
- Offers data-driven and template cases
- Produces XML and JUNIT logs
- Available as header-only, static, or shared
Against
- No assertion synchronization for multiple threads
- Listed for Linux and Windows
The verdict
Boost.Test covers a range of test organizations, diagnostics, and output formats for C++ projects. Its lack of synchronization for concurrent assertion calls is a key limitation for multithreaded testing.
Who it suits
Boost.Test suits C++ developers who need program checks, unit testing, or execution monitoring. It supports C++11, C++14, and C++17.
