What it is
Bibliometrix is a free, open-source R tool for quantitative scientometric and bibliometric research. It supports descriptive analysis, co-citation, co-authorship, keyword co-occurrence, thematic mapping, and historiographic networks. It works with bibliographic files from Web of Science, Scopus, Dimensions, The Lens, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library. Companion R packages provide API support for Dimensions, NCBI PubMed, and Scopus. Biblioshiny supplies a web interface aimed at users without coding or R knowledge, while the package can also integrate with other R statistical packages. Biblioverse packages extend its scope from data collection to text and content analysis, and openalexR can bring OpenAlex publication, author, institution, and concept metadata into bibliometrix structures. Using bibliometrix and biblioshiny requires installing R. Stable releases are distributed through CRAN; a beta on GitHub is updated daily and may contain minor bugs. PubMed exports lack citation and reference-list metadata, preventing citation, bibliographic coupling, and co-citation links. Access to Web of Science and Scopus services requires a subscription.
For and against

- Web of Science and Scopus service access requires subscriptions.
- The daily-updated GitHub beta may contain minor bugs.
The verdict
Bibliometrix combines bibliographic analysis with R integrations and a web interface. Check source-specific limits and subscription requirements, and distinguish the CRAN stable release from the beta.
Who it suits
Bibliometrix suits academics, PhD students, and research institutions conducting quantitative bibliographic research. Biblioshiny may suit people who want a web interface without coding or R knowledge.
