Backdrop

Backdrop is an iPhone app that generates wallpapers shaped around users’ interests. Users can request an image by describing a scene, mood, subject, color palette, or visual style, and can optionally select a photo as a visual reference. Wallpaper layouts are composed for phones with space for the clock, widgets, and icons. Users can make images on demand or receive a personalized wallpaper each morning; Apple Shortcuts can apply a new daily wallpaper automatically without opening the app.

Anyone can browse and save global wallpapers, and new accounts receive three creation credits. Backdrop Pro costs $3.99 a month and includes a personalized daily wallpaper, 15 monthly creation credits, visual references, feedback, and remixes. The app requires iOS 17.0 or later. Backdrop says selected reference photos are not stored and its photo picker accesses only the chosen photo. It also says it does not sell personal information or display third-party ads.

Backdrop offers prompt-based wallpaper creation, daily images, and optional photo references, with free browsing and three creation credits for new accounts. It is limited to iPhone running iOS 17.0 or later; Pro costs $3.99 a month.

Backdrop suits iPhone users who want wallpapers generated from personal prompts or optional photo references. It may also suit users who want a daily wallpaper applied through Apple Shortcuts.

Overview

Backdrop is an iPhone wallpaper app built around AI generation and personal interests. It suits people who want phone-ready images shaped by their own prompts and a daily refresh. Its strongest appeal is the combination of custom creation and automatic wallpaper changes; the main constraint is that it works only on iPhone.

Key features

Users can request a scene, mood, subject, color palette, or visual style, then optionally add a photo as a visual reference. That gives people more control than choosing only from a preset gallery, while the reference option can help steer a result toward a particular look. Backdrop says the source photo is not stored, and its photo picker accesses only the image the user selects.

Images are composed with room for a phone’s clock, widgets, and icons. That screen-aware layout makes Backdrop a better fit for home and lock screen use than a general image generator that does not account for interface elements. Users can generate on demand or receive a personalized wallpaper each morning. Apple Shortcuts can apply a new daily wallpaper automatically, which is useful for people who want a changing screen without opening the app every day.

Reference-based creations and remixes remain private to the user’s account. Backdrop uses OpenRouter and OpenAI for AI-assisted text and image generation. It says it does not sell personal information or display third-party ads. Account deletion removes the active profile, generated wallpapers and images, prompts, and related generation records.

Pricing

The free plan costs nothing and allows anyone to browse and save global wallpapers. New accounts receive three creation credits, so free access is useful for exploring the gallery and trying a few generations, but it is not a continuing allowance for regular custom creation.

Backdrop Pro costs $3.99 a month, billed monthly. It includes a personalized daily wallpaper, 15 monthly creation credits, visual references, feedback, and remixes. Pro suits users who want recurring personalization or expect to create more than the three initial credits allow. The monthly credits place a clear limit on generation volume, while the free plan gives up the personalized daily wallpaper and Pro creation tools.

Platforms

Backdrop is for iPhone and requires iOS 17.0 or later. That rules it out for Android users and for iPhone owners on older software. The App Store listing provides support at [email protected].

Who it's for

Backdrop is a strong match for iPhone users who enjoy changing their wallpaper, want images tailored to specific prompts, and value compositions that leave interface elements legible. The Shortcuts option also makes it appealing to people who want the daily change handled automatically. It is a weaker fit for anyone who needs cross-platform access, wants to generate frequently without a monthly credit limit, or is satisfied with a static collection of free wallpapers.

Pros and cons

• Pros: Prompt controls cover subject, mood, palette, and style, so users can guide the image toward a particular idea.
• Pros: Phone-first composition leaves room for clocks, widgets, and icons, with Shortcuts support for automatic daily changes.
• Pros: Free browsing and saving are open to anyone, and new accounts get three creation credits to sample generation.
• Cons: Support is limited to iPhone running iOS 17.0 or later.
• Cons: The free account has only three creation credits, and Pro still caps generation at 15 credits per month.

Verdict

Choose Backdrop if you use a supported iPhone and want custom wallpapers composed for its screen, especially if a daily personalized change sounds more appealing than a static gallery. Its prompt and photo-reference controls make creation flexible, and Shortcuts can automate the refresh. Look elsewhere if you need Android or desktop support, or if three free credits and a 15-credit monthly Pro allowance cannot cover your generation habits.
