AWS Cloud9
What it is
AWS Cloud9 is a browser-based integrated development environment for writing, running, and debugging code. It combines an editor, debugger, and terminal and supports more than 40 programming languages, including JavaScript, Python, PHP, Ruby, Go, and C++. Users can create an environment on a new Amazon EC2 instance or connect an existing Linux server over SSH. EC2 environments include Git, Docker, language runtimes, package managers, and an AWS CLI authenticated with the logged-in user’s permissions. The editor provides auto-completion, code folding, hinting, syntax highlighting, and more than 30 color schemes. Cloud9 includes tools for developing and deploying Node.js or Python AWS Lambda functions and supports AWS SAM. IAM users in the same AWS account can collaborate in real time. Cloud9 has no additional service charge, but EC2, EBS, and other AWS resources are billed at normal rates.
For and against
For
- Supports over 40 programming languages
- Includes editor, debugger, and terminal
- Provides Git and Docker in EC2 environments
- Supports real-time collaboration
- Can connect to existing Linux servers
Against
- AWS resource usage is billed separately
- EC2 users handle patching and backups
- Restarting can end active terminal sessions
- Browser-based access requires a supported recent browser
The verdict
Cloud9 provides a broad browser IDE with AWS tooling, Lambda support, and shared environments. The service itself has no additional charge, but the AWS infrastructure behind an environment still incurs normal usage billing.
Who it suits
Cloud9 suits developers who want browser-based coding with a terminal and debugger, including AWS developers and people evaluating AWS services. It also fits teams sharing environments within one AWS account.
