AWS CDK
What it is
AWS CDK is an infrastructure-as-code framework for defining AWS cloud resources with familiar programming languages and deploying them through AWS CloudFormation. Stable bindings are available for TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, C#/.NET, and Go. The AWS Construct Library supplies reusable components for many AWS services and features. CDK Pipelines supports CI/CD deployment to testing, integration, and production environments. AWS CDK Explorer, a preview feature in the Visual Studio Code AWS Toolkit, can browse projects, stacks, resources, and policies. The framework supports policy as code, drift detection, importing existing resources, managed state, and self-hosted execution. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows and supports AWS. The CDK itself has no charge, although deployed AWS resources can incur charges. Developers need Node.js 22.x or later regardless of language. Deployments use configured AWS credentials and IAM roles; custom constructs cannot guarantee compliance because general-purpose code may bypass checks.
For and against
For
- Supports six stable programming-language bindings
- Reusable constructs cover many AWS services
- CDK Pipelines supports CI/CD environments
- Includes policy as code and drift detection
- No charge for using the CDK
Against
- Deployed AWS resources may incur charges
- Requires Node.js 22.x or later
- Supports AWS only
- Custom constructs cannot guarantee compliance
The verdict
AWS CDK lets infrastructure teams define and deploy AWS resources in general-purpose languages. It offers reusable constructs and pipeline support without a CDK usage charge, while resource costs and security configuration remain the user’s responsibility.
Who it suits
AWS CDK is intended for developers and administrators defining AWS infrastructure in supported programming languages. It suits teams using CloudFormation, reusable constructs, and CI/CD deployment workflows.
